Based out of its Paris studios, Sandro’s design teams have been creating ready-to-wear collections and accessories with an elegant charm and a distinctive Parisian twist, since 1984.
Through its founders and creative directors, Evelyne and Ilan Chetrite, Sandro has developed a genuine community spirit, one that is generous and proud. Season after season, the fashion house has come to feel like an extended family.
Through the collections, our priority has always been to produce high quality fashion and make luxury and style accessible. Now, in addition to this comes an enhanced duty of responsibility with regards to people and the planet, as well as a desire to be transparent with customers.
For several years, Sandro has been stepping up its efforts to facilitate the transition towards more responsible and more sustainable fashion. Every day, we act at every step in our value chain to transform our model, to preserve natural resources and ecosystems, limit our impact on global warming and improve working conditions.
The road is full of challenges, but it is also rich in learnings.
Along the way, we wanted to open the doors of our company even wider, to show you what happens behind the scenes of our business.
SELECTING THE RAW MATERIALS
The starting point for creating our clothing and accessories is the selection and production of the raw materials used to make them. Upstream of our value chains is also where the most important part of the social and environmental impact of our sector lies.
We take the greatest care in selecting the materials we use. Our aim is to offer our customers high quality materials, such as cotton, linen, wool and cashmere, that respect both people and the planet. These come from natural animal or plant fibers that give them many qualities.
Mindful of the environmental and social impact of each of the materials used to make our designs, we are now focusing our efforts on organic cotton, Ecovero certified viscose, RWS certified wool, LWG certified tanneries and the latest eco-responsible materials. Not forgetting the eco-responsible washing of our denim, recycled materials, linen, etc.

Cotton is the most widely produced natural plant material in the world and one of the most commonly used in the textile industry.
Organic cotton is both an ethical and an ecological choice. From sowing the seeds to harvesting the cotton, the plants are cultivated without pesticides, insecticides or chemical fertilizers, and GMO free. Its cultivation respects ecosystems, does not deplete the soil, consumes less water than conventional cotton and is non-toxic to producers.
• In 2021, 93% of our T-shirts and sweatshirts and 70% of our full range of cotton products are made from certified organic cotton
• 100% of our T-shirts and sweatshirts and 80% of the full range will be made from organic cotton in 2022
• 100% of the full range in organic cotton by 2025
RWS ("Responsible Wool Standard") certified wool
Warm and easily dyed, wool is a natural and durable material/fiber with many qualities. It can be found in our sweaters, cardigans, dresses, coats and even in some of our accessories.
Its environmental impact is linked to greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, soil degradation and animal welfare violations.
The wool complies with the "Responsible Wool Standard" (RWS) directive, ensuring respectful treatment of the sheep and responsible management of the land on which they feed and rest.

Ecovero and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified viscose
A staple of the textile industry, viscose is an extremely versatile material that allows you to create fabrics that are durable, soft, drapable and comfortable to wear.
It is obtained through a chemical process that recreates artificial fibers using plant cellulose from cotton, bamboo or eucalyptus. As well as being polluting, the process consumes a lot of natural resources that a growing number of producers want to make more responsible, by taking action on both forest management and the fiber manufacturing process.
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification, which currently only concerns 5% of the world’s forests, is an international certification that promotes sustainable management of forests, whose trees are used in the manufacture of finished products made from wood or wood pulp, such as artificial textile fibers and packaging.
Beyond the responsible sourcing of wood fiber (FSC or PEFC certified), eco-responsible Lenzing™ Ecovero™ viscose is durable and breathable – similar to Lyocell Tencel – and the product of a manufacturing process subject to strict environmental standards imposed by the EU Eco Label. The production of Lenzing™ Ecovero™ fibers generates up to 50% less emissions and water consumption, compared to conventional viscose.

PRODUCING OUR CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES
It is in design studios and garment workshops in the heart of Paris that the prototypes for the Sandro collections are made.
Production takes place at 110 partner sites in 30 countries, including: Portugal, France, Italy, Turkey, China, Morocco, Tunisia and the United States. Partner selection is guided above all else by the search for what can be rare technical know-how.
At this stage, the main issues we face relate to working conditions, the environmental footprint of the production sites and the health and environmental impacts of certain processes, such as dyeing, bleaching and tanning.
Sandro is continuously improving the traceability of its collections, retracing all the steps in its production chain. To make it ever more responsible, we are focusing on enhancing the audits conducted with our suppliers and reducing the environmental impact of the production process.
Producing less and producing better is a day-to-day concern for us. To that end, we are working on the very structure of the collections. For example, between 2017 and 2020, we reduced the size of our collections by 25%. By adjusting the volumes produced as best possible, our residual stock volumes at the end of the season decreased globally by 27% between 2018 and 2021, despite COVID-19.
Sandro is committed to ethical and responsible production. In fact, the majority of our suppliers and manufacturers are long-standing partners who have grown with Sandro's success around the world. We maintain privileged relationships with them and constantly encourage them to implement the highest environmental and social standards.
In order to separate the different stages in our production chain, we classify our suppliers according to our degree of proximity to them, from tier 1 to 4, tier 1 designating the final stage of the production process, i.e. the last step before placing the product on the market.
These conditions, particularly in the field of human rights and employment law, are formalized in our general conditions of purchase and Supplier Code of Conduct. To ensure that they are respected, we arrange regular audits by expert and independent third parties.
We rely on the expertise of the BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative), a corporate social compliance initiative aimed at improving working conditions in their international supply chains; the SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) and WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) social audit protocols, the WCA (Workplace Conditions Assessment) program and the SA 8000 standard for social responsibility relating to decent work.

• By the end of 2021, 90% of our tier 1 suppliers will have been audited by recognized international organizations (BSCI, WRAP, SMETA, SA 8000 and WCA)
Reducing the environmental impact of our production process.
Energy consumption, natural resource management, pollution of the air and waterways associated with the dyeing and finishing processes. These are the indicators that we measure and reduce over the course of our collections.
We support our suppliers in obtaining internationally recognized environmental certifications. These allow us to progress towards production methods that are less polluting, emit fewer greenhouse gases and are more respectful of natural resources, ecosystems and workers' health.
In particular, we rely on ISO 14001 and Bluesign certification standards, which aim to integrate environmental concerns and improve the energy performance of organizations respectively; the LWG (Leather Working Group) certification, an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production (gold, silver and bronze ratings), or the independent OEKO-TEX® STeP certification, which assesses production facilities at all processing levels of the textile and leather industry and aims to certify their health and ecological qualities and to guarantee the absence of products that are toxic to the body and the environment.

THE TRANSPORT AND DISTRIBUTION OF OUR COLLECTIONS
After manufacturing, our collections are sent to our physical points of sale in 40 countries or go straight to customers when they order online.
To reduce the impact of our distribution, we are working on the design and management of our points of sale and maximizing the use of low-carbon transport and delivery methods.
Energy consumption and shop fittings
We strive to continually reduce energy consumption at our points of sale by using renewable energy and low-energy lighting as much as possible.
Furthermore, we favor recycled and recyclable materials for shop fittings. Since 2020, we have been working to redesign all our stores using a new, more environmentally-friendly concept incorporating responsible materials (lime-based mineral wall plaster, natural pigments and marble powder, wood from FSC labelled forests, etc.).

• Our new shopping bags are made from 100% recyclable FSC certified paper with grey board reinforcements made from recycled and recyclable FSC certified cardboard.
Low carbon delivery
We are also developing low carbon delivery to make online shopping more sustainable. Wherever possible, we use innovative delivery services and encourage returns and exchanges to be made in store.
• Our e-commerce boxes are FSC certified and 100% recyclable. They are designed to be easily resealed and reused in the event of returns.
• Some of our e-commerce orders, especially in Europe, are dispatched from our stores closest to the delivery location, so as to limit the miles travelled
• Implementing reusable packaging solutions for our deliveries from 2022
